Spring has already begun and the first spring flowers appear with it. In the forest, they will probably be anemones, the entire fields of which bloom white. On city lawns, yellow coltsfoot flowers will appear among the first to appear.

The mother plant produces long, easily rooted stolons. The inflorescence shoots are covered with scales, which makes it easy to distinguish a coltsfoot inflorescence from a similar dandelion whose inflorescence is naked.

Coltsfoot is commonly used in folk medicine, hence its numerous regional names: bielkuch, donkey’s foot, countryman, kniat, kaczyniec, water lily, white wood, goose heads. The most local name for coltsfoot is the pike flower, so named because its flowering period coincides with the pike spawning period.

The Polish name “podbiał” (from ?white underside?) refers to the white colour of the underside of the leaves. Its English name, Coltsfoot, refers to the shape of the leaves and means the leg of a foal.

The medicinal raw materials are coltsfoot leaves – Folium farfarae and inflorescences – Flos farfarae.

Chemistry

Coltsfoot leaves contain mucilage substances, tannins, flavonoids and bitterness, essential oil, phytosterols and organic acids. Coltsfoot inflorescences contain the same compounds as its leaves, but they have more essential oil and flavonoids and less mucus.

The indications for the use of coltsfoot are very wide and include catarrh of the mucous membranes throat, bronchi and larynx (especially in children and the elderly). A decoction of leaves and flowers also facilitates expectoration, and soothes coughs (especially dry ones). Externally, it can be used for compresses in seborrheic dermatitis, inflammation and erythema of the skin, it also has a soothing effect in the case of 1st and 2nd degree sunburns. It is also used in cosmetics, for the care of oily skin.

As you can see, it is a valuable herbal product with versatile medical use.
